Creativity-as-Service-as-Love-as-Legacy

In light of the current Sun-Jupiter trine in Virgo-Capricorn, a lot of us are thinking about the kinds of legacies we wish to create and the paths of service that lead us to them.

The old Piscean narrative equates service with sacrifice, martyrdom and suffering. This is not required as we head into a New Age.

As I understand it. …

The current model of sustainable service is one that honors your passion, your unique point of view and an understanding how you can best share that with the world.

Taken to an extreme, following your passions can turn you into a hedonistic diva blind to the suffering of others. But there are many points in between.

In the video, I talk about the production (on and off screen) of Black Panther as a highly successful example of how creative service can transform the collective.

I also share some of the stories that have come to light in the recent passing of Chadwick Boseman, the titular hero of the movie and his passion to enact change in the limited time he knew he had left. He died from colon cancer at the age of 43. He did not make his diagnosis public and through it, he actually spent time in the Cancer Ward of St.Jude’s to bring inspiration to the children who were suffering from what killed him. Prior to his passing, he was working on his own book on how to be antiracist.

There is a deep magic in the movie, on and off screen and in the people who worked on the project. The aftermath and immediate upswelling of tears, tributes and art showed everyone – beyond shadow of a doubt – of the power of this project and the healing it catalyzed for so many.

Unless you are wanting to create just so you can see your name on a billboard, your creativity can also heal.

Many have old scripts as to what ‘ service ‘ looks like, so taking a path that honors that impulse can seem selfish, disconnected and blind. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Stay engaged with what is happening in the world around you. You do not create in a vacuum.

Reject the idea that hyper-cerebral discourse is the only way you can make your argument or put a case forth for social justice and greater equity. Sometimes that argument is better made through the visual, acoustic or other format.

Ask yourself if you have the right to tell a certain story and – if youty6 6666666666===]\t

y6g=- (that was my kitty typing her contribution)

And if you do, do so in a way that honors that story and what it represents.

For those of you who want to check in with this concept at a more intellectual level, check out the concept of sub-alternity, put forth by scholar Gayatri Spivak in her article ‘ Can The Sub-Altern Speak’ ?. It sensitizes you to the difficulty of representing the marginalized without erasing their agency and the right to construct and determine their own identities and ways of knowing. (The term ‘sub-altern’ was coined by Antonio Gramsci, but brought back to light through Spivak’s engagement with it. You may also want to check out ‘ Geographies of Post Colonialism ‘ by Joanne Sharp).

Having said that – and done your due diligence as to whether it’s your story to tell, and how can you do so in ways that empower rather than erase agency –

Protect your creations, honor your creativity, but don’t make it about your own ego or getting someone else’s approval or validation from it.

That’s the difference in the Age of Aquarius. We come together with each of our individual talents, without needing there to be one lone hero or one being leading the way for everyone else. And each contribution is respected – as it lights the way for the next.

Certainly, in this very, very difficult year – the arts have really helped so many hold onto their sanity in the face of enforced isolation.

Now, more than ever, people need to see themselves represented in a way that validates their right to be, live, and have their own stories and adventures.

Singing that song, telling that story, penning that tune that captures the mood – whatever form it may take –

Let that Creation be Your Service.

That Leads to a far more Sustainable Legacy.

For yourself, your community & the collective.

I hope that helps. There’s of course far more information and energy in the video.

Blessings,
