In this video, I talk about the 50-year influenza cycles indicated by the Chiron-in-Aries transit and the forceful restructuring of global power indicated by the Pholus-in-Capricorn transit. It is unwise to take this outbreak of infection at face value. Pay attention to what is being said now so we can nip this in the bud and avoid subtler machinations that prey upon collective and existential insecurity. There is a lot more in the text below, so grab a cuppa.

In early March, I made the decision to dissolve my Facebook presence owing to political censorship. It has made drastic changes to the numbers of people who had access to my work previously (and certainly funds that came through) – but I felt that it was more important to stick to my principles.

At a personal level, despite life still being very challenging in practical terms – it has brought a lot of peace of mind and given me perspective as to how we’re essentially being played off against each other. I find Facebook and its algorithms to support such division rather than to promote unity through its practices of censorship and selective filtering.

Do note that the cause of unity becomes a farce when one uses it as an excuse to ignore perspectives of those who are not privileged or seen as important enough to count. In other words, true unity comes through an acknowledgment of diversity rather than its erasure.

Whilst I wanted to have a few more weeks of rest and reflection, the reports I have been hearing back from fans and friends committed to staying in touch have shown me that silence at this time is tantamount to abandonment.

In the hopes of bridging that gap, I have prepared this document that demonstrates the way in which coronavirus is being spread from an astrological perspective. I do not want you to interpret this in a way that conflicts with the practical steps needed to keep yourself and your loved ones safe.

Rather than the virus itself, it is the hype and panic surrounding it that can actually do more damage to us all – and at such a vital time of transformation.

The first recorded case of Covid-19 infection is dated 17 November 2019. This is according to media reportage on unpublished data held by the Chinese government. (Source: Helen Davidson, The Guardian, 13 March 2020).

On this day, we saw the Super-Galactic Center at 1 Libra opposing Chiron at 1 Aries and squaring Pholus at 0 Capricorn. Heracles was at 26 Capricorn.

(Funnily enough, I had looked at the Pholus transit in November and thought my interpretation to be off given that the outbreak of Covid-19 was generally presented as having happened later. Pholus is also conjunct the Mean South Node in Capricorn today – as I am writing this piece. )

Chiron is referred to as the ‘Wounded Healer’ in astrology and denotes experiences of wounding which, through transmutation and learning, can result in the generation of powerful medicine. In Aries, it connects to issues above the neck (face, head, etc.) and a person’s sense of selfhood.

Chiron was accidentally wounded by a poisoned arrow let loose by his student Heracles. He trades his immortality to save the life of Prometheus – the immortal who was condemned to being chained to a rock with an eagle eating his ever-regenerating liver for all of eternity. Prometheus was punished for stealing fire from the Gods and introducing it to mortals. By forsaking his immortality, Chiron is ultimately freed from the pain of the poison and can then die in piece.

Chiron and Pholus are both related in powerful ways.

Pholus is a centaur from Greek Mythology. To show hospitality to the hero Heracles, Pholus opens a bottle of wine gifted to the Centaurs by the drunken god of excess, Dionysus. The aroma of the wine drives the Centaurs into a battle frenzy whereupon they begin to attack Heracles. As Heracles pursues the centaurs with his flying poison arrows, it is here that one hits his healer-teacher Chiron – causing his death. As Pholus (the host) examines an arrow from the body of a fallen centaur, the arrow falls on his leg and he dies.

Greek mythology immortalizes the death and sacrifice of Chiron by rendering him as the Archer constellation. Pholus instead becomes constellation Centaurus with his wine-cup as the constellation Crater.

There is much that can be read into this narrative. The centaurs, as half human-half beast are representations of the constant choice between remaining upon the path of nobility or giving into a baser nature. (Personally, I see animals as being more noble as a matter of course than most people these days and do not subscribe to that binary). Reports of pets being thrown out of buildings in response to the fear is certainly an example where that binary gets easily reversed. When you think about all those animals that stay true to owners who treat them with less than they deserve, it’s clear that the equation of baser = animal nature is one that needs to be questioned.

Getting back to Pholus:

The aroma of the wine, infused by a drunken god of indulgence, can easily be read as an airborne virus or transmission of some kind. In this case, it can signify coronavirus itself, or perhaps the waves of panic it has generated all over the world. I do see the two as linked and will return to this point. If Dionysus is involved, it speaks to reckless excess whatever the case may be.

In Capricorn, this energy refers to the establishment of structures of power, capitalism, government and the creation of social classes and masters ruling over the disenfranchised, slaves, captives and the dispossessed. The intoxicant is whatever form of power justifies the abuses and excesses required to obtain it.

I’ll talk about periods of Pholus-in-Capricorn later in this post and what they have brought about on the planet. Much of this is woven into the colonization of the world by European powers, the enslavement and trafficking of millions under slavery, the forced dislocation of indigenous populations (who survived the diseases introduced by colonizers), WW2, the changing of political ideologies and fault-lines across the planet.

To me, Pholus’ energies put coronavirus as the agent of ‘intoxication’ that pave the way for further inroads into governmental control and the limitation of personal freedoms.

Getting back to the myth:

Whilst it does not state that Heracles himself was intoxicated by the wine, going after the fleeing centaurs in a reckless manner (causing the death of his teacher) indicates that he too may have been affected.

Pholus appears innocent of ill-will but accidentally releases the substance that causes these dangerous changes in behavior. He does not take adequate precautions in examining the fallen and succumbs to the poison itself.

The poison itself could have come from the mythological beast known as the Hydra or from something given to Heracles by his teacher for weaponization and use.

Therefore, there is a process of manufacture involved and its exposure and effects arise through largely unintended consequences and the effects of intoxication or frenzy. There is no indication that Dionysus, Chiron, Pholus or Heracles were aware of the effects and potential and death that would result from any of their actions.

The role of the Super-Galactic Center in all of this can be read in too many ways. Essentially it means that whatever has been triggered or set afoot here is the result of many prior agreements coming into play, i.e. that which has been contracted (seriously, no pun intended).

Chiron at 0’0 – 2’59 Aries: 03 July 1967 – 19 January 1970

In 1968/1969 and 1969/1970, the A/H3N2 influenza virus resulted in significant mortality in the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. The influenza virus was first isolated in Hong Kong in July 1968. According to the CDC, the pandemic resulted in 1 million deaths worldwide and about 100,000 in the United States alone. Those above the age of 65 were most likely to die from the illness.

Sound familiar enough?

2nd batch of dates:

Chiron at 0’0 – 2’59 Aries: 17 April 2018 – 11 February 2020

H3N2 struck yet again during the late 2017/early 2018 flu season, paving the way for influenza B to become dominant in the months of March-May 2018. The 2017-2018 flu season affects the US population severely. Approximately 45 million were affects with 21 million influenza-associated medical visits, 810,000 influenza-related hospitalizations and 61,000 influenza-associated deaths.

I have gone through the different transits of Chiron through Aries in the 17th , 18th and 19th centuries but have not found evidence to indicate that all outbreaks of disease correspond to this transit alone. At best, this should be taken as a corroborating factor rather than outright causality. To suggest otherwise is irresponsible and factually incorrect.

Assuming the internet is still working at that time and humans have a planet to live on …. it would be interesting to see if the pattern continues and holds true the next time Chiron is between 0’0 Aries – 2’59 Aries: 03 May 2068 – 26 February 2070. If we were to look at one step prior, the Spanish Flu of 1918 also corresponds to Chiron in the early degrees of Aries!! It does fit.

Essentially what we’re looking at are cycles of influenza-related pandemics that occur in 50-year intervals. That’s the key takeaway from the Chiron analysis.

I’m looking at the list of influenza pandemics and this is the data I could find (on Wikipedia)

1889-1890 H3N8 or H2N2 900 million infected 1 million deaths worldwide 2/5 severity

1918 H1N1 500 million infected 20-100 million deaths 5/5 severity!

(Spanish Flu)

1957-1958 H2N2 0.25-1 Billion 1-4 million deaths 2/5 severity

(Asian Flu)

1977-1978 H1N1 Unknown Unknown

(Russian Flu)

1968-1969 H3N2 0.25-1 Billion 1-4 million deaths 2/5 severity

(Hong Kong Flu)

2009-2010 H1N1/09 0.7-1.4 Billion 151,700-575,400 deaths 1/5 severity

(originated in Mexico, spread worldwide)

The 50 year cycles do appear to be in effect for 1918, 1968, 2019. This could of course be mere coincidence but the history of disease outbreaks for centuries prior to this list are strewn all over the place and lack the classification system of severity.

In the 1889-1890 case, Chiron was in Cancer and Pholus was in Pisces

In 1957-1958, Chiron and Pholus were both in Aquarius

In 1977-1978, Chiron was exiting Aries and Pholus was in Pisces

If were to look at the 50 year series, 1818 and 1868 would have corresponded respectively to the first and fourth cholera pandemics. But again, it’s not sufficient data to point to a conclusive pattern as there have been many other outbreaks of disease in other times.

It’s tempting to want to fit this into some kind of narrative or predictive pattern to make more sense of it. But our desires to creative narrative should not compromise factual accuracy.

And just for some perspective . . . .

Let us not forget that colonization of the Americas was made possible through a decimation of indigenous populations through the same waves of disease and illness. These numbers are not recorded with the same diligence.

For reference:

“ Our new data-driven best estimate is a death toll of 56 million by the beginning of the 1600s — 90 percent of the pre-Columbian Indigenous population and around 10 percent of the global population at the time. This makes the “Great Dying” the largest human mortality event in proportion to the global population, putting it second in absolute terms only to World War II, in which 80 million people died — 3% of the world’s population at the time. “ Source:

And all this in the mere span of just a little over century.

The numbers that these tables are talking about are really very limited when we consider the ways in which disease has decimated segments of the human population over time, especially through cross-cultural encounters of a forced nature, i.e. slavery, colonization, geographic dislocation and so on. We discuss this deeply in the section on Pholus.

Either way, looking at Chiron in Aries, the wounded healer gets attacked by means of whatever is exposed to the head and sense of self. I’m not sure this placement refers to the illness itself or the attack on a person’s sense of basic sanity and self-hood. I feel that the panic around this is likely to cause more damage than the illness itself. If there’s anything that table of influenza pandemics indicates, it is that better medical interventions have reduced mortality rates over time.

It may be a wider warning to be mindful of where one shows their face as it where. Those with Aries placements in the 6th, 8th, 12th houses may want to pay a little more attention to their health in general.

I feel this is also a much needed wake-up call to the collective to really assess where we all are in terms our journey with mental health. The level of ungroundedness I see in the collective is scarier than the illness itself (and yes, I live in an affected country).

As everyone googling coronavirus would know by now, there are many strands of it. I encountered it earlier this year when my brother’s cat was diagnosed with Feline Coronavirus. Thankfully, she’s a passive carrier. This is something found in a low percentage of all stray cats and is something that every veterinarian is aware of. (And no, there’s no real evidence at this time to indicate that Covid-19 is coming through your household cat or dog)

What we learnt about FIP/ feline coronavirus is that it can activate through stress. And we do our best to keep her as happy as possible. At least, we try.

Whilst I’m not making this as a medical claim, I wouldn’t be surprised if stress played a role in the experienced severity of Covid-19. Stress and panic are generally speaking terrible inhibitors of the body’s immune system to begin with.

And as I have said repeatedly on my live video feeds, fear is really not going to get you through this scenario. You literally have zero benefit from panicking.

Just take the necessary precautions. Human beings have been facing illnesses and diseases and pandemics for centuries. This is nothing new.

The only thing that is new is the ability of media hype to spin awareness of a situation out of control and induce even more states of fear and panic amongst the populace.

Which brings me to Pholus and his Dionysian wine.

When Pholus uncorked his wine-cup, the scent of the liquid sent the centaurs into a state of frenzy. Rather than see this as the pathogen directly, I would see this as the psychological trigger that makes a person more susceptible to the illness or more susceptible to be harmed through collateral acts.

Voluntary social isolation is not the worst idea – especially when you can stay in touch with friends and family through virtual channels. But remember that it’s not just the physical pathogens that are dangerous: it’s the aura of fear hyped up around them.

Keep your head-space and your home-space clean.

Be selective in what you engage with.

Stop obsessing over the news and events that are out of your control.

This is a literally a regular feature of human existence on this planet over time.

I think what is really brought up is an awareness of our own fragility and that our sense of selfhood and its freedoms does come with limits – and that’s the frenzy that Pholus is evoking right now. Whether it’s Australians fighting one another over toilet paper or Americans afraid of the dropping of the Dow or the cancellation of public events…

In recent memory, this just hasn’t been an issue for countries that pride themselves on their personal freedoms to do what they want when they will. These impositions fly in the face of the collective mythology that surrounds national identities that pride themselves on personal freedoms. Often, these countries are the ones with the longest histories of colonization and establishment of narratives that justified the conquest of power through the enslavement of others. (Ironic, isn’t it)

In other parts of the world we see that India has its own public lockdowns and closed businesses and bans from travellers from certain countries. African countries are banning European travellers. A lot has changed in Malaysia since I wrote the first draft of this piece as we now have a Movement Control Order to be enforced by the army and subject to a 2,000 USD fine if one is caught travelling for any reason apart from buying essential supplies, etc.

Each country has its own response, not only on the basis of the severity of cases but also how the public limitations on movement, travel, social events and so on clash with the narrative of personal independence. This is a key theme that arises through various waves of the Pholus-in-Capricorn transit.

Awareness, humility and respect for the fragility and gift of life and consciousness at this time is what is truly called for. Humanity has survived worse and in all likelihood will continue to survive. And we just can’t afford to lose our heads. Because there are worse things to worry about beyond coronavirus – as my analysis of Pholus in Capricorn in the 17th – 20th century shows.

With Pholus in early Capricorn, what’s really being challenged is our ability to respond to wide-scale changes in the way we see power and vulnerability and the ‘intoxicants’ that justify the acquisition of power for some at the cost of freedom of life and liberty for others.

17th century : 1657 – 1681

These years paved the way for the entrenchment of colonial rule and the division of power that would influence the lives of all beings on the planet. After all – the collectively agreed upon political myth of territorial sovereignty was only signed in 1648 as the treaty of Westphalia. (Try telling me how the globalized movement of people, diseases, culture, goods, services, influence and so on allows for a hard/literal reading of the concept).

The 1660s saw the restoration of the monarchy in England after a brief attempt at a different form of government with Oliver Cromwell at its head. (He refused the crown and was ‘ ritually executed ‘ two years after his actual death). Talk about the restoration of old structures of power.

By 1680, the cruelty that was the Transatlantic Slave Trade had established itself as the primary source of labour for Virginian plantations. There were fewer than a thousands slaves in Virginia and Maryland in 1660. Within twenty years, that number tripled, rising from 4,500 to 12,000!

I wonder if the ‘ aroma ‘ of Pholus’ wine in this era was the intoxicant of power, acquired through brute force, the logic of early capitalism and the sanction of empire. Textbooks present this period of time through rose-tinted glasses that cheer on the colonizing pioneers without looking at the human cost of their ventures.

Either way, we can see the faultlines which divided parts of the world into territories to be conquered and one class of humanity as slaves serving their colonial masters. That legacy and imprint is carried till this day .

18th century: 1747-1773

The French and Indian war of the 1760s established Great Britain as the global hegemon through colonial conquest as part of the broader period of The Seven Years’ War (1756-1763). In this time the warring powers of Europe fought amongst themselves to establish dominion across five continents. In the same time period, the American Revolution (1765-1783) essentially sought to hold British power in check. It was on the one hand the consolidation of empire and the other hand its limitation by revolutionary powers citing the values of freedom, liberty and equality.

Let it be understood that those concepts were selectively applied despite the universal nature of such rhetoric. We can easily see this period as one of active building and re-making of dominions of power by colonial forces that divided themselves on the basis of their allegiance to the monarchy or a ‘ freer ‘ form of government and commerce.

Pholus’ wine in this period appears to be the rhetoric of freedom and revolution against a monarchical status quo.

19th century: 1838-1863

Queen Victoria’s rise to the throne in 1837 prompted a new wave of imperialistic conquest and dominion across the globe, especially across the Ottoman Empire, Hong Kong and India.

1839-1842 saw the First Opium War fought between the British and the Chinese as the British took over Hong Kong by force. The Chinese emperor of the time wanted to ban the sale of opium, however, this was rejected by Queen Victoria’s government. The British then won a decisive maritime victory over the Chinese to continue the lucrative opium trade.

(Think intoxicant = opium = justification for conquest: it doesn’t get clearer than that)

Also in 1839: Africans were kidnapped to be sold into slavery and loaded on board a ship called the Amisted in Havana, Cuba. They mounted a mutiny off the coast of Cuba, however, were still steered towards New York by the ship’s crew. They were taken into custody by the U.S. Navy, however, they won their freedom to return to Africa after a legal suit. This was made possible by British pressure on the Americans as the former had already signed a treaty prohibiting slavery south of the Equator with the Spainards. The Africans brought to Cuba were therefore – as understood by British law – victims of illegal kidnapping. Cuba at this time was ruled by Spain. (I find this hugely ironic given Britain’s imperialistic past … ) . That being said, a new ideology was touted as a means to contest forcible acquisitions of persons as property.

As part of the broader picture, between 1830-1850, the Indian Removal Act enabled the forced dislocation of over 60,000 First Nations people from the South-Eastern United States – paving the way of European settlement of the ‘ Deep South’. The most famous of these is the forced migration of the Cherokee people in 1838, precipitated by the discovery of gold in Georgia. Thousands of Cherokees perished along the way. That facet of history is … simply too deep raw and real for me to get into right now.

1848-1855 saw the California gold rush . A conservative estimate posits that no less than 9,492 Indigenous people were killed between 1849 and 1870. The U.S. ‘ occupied’ California in 1846. Government authories and militias allowed and encouraged acts of enslavement, kidnapping, rape, child separation and displacement. This was known as the Californian Genocide. The Gold Rush made life far worse for the indigenous populations who were forcibly displaced, enslaved or who simply died from exposure to the colonizers’ illnesses as the settlers needed land. (Source: Wikipedia)

1849 saw a worldwide frenzy for gold which led colonial prospectors to search for gold in Australia, Scotland, South Africa, Wales, North America, etc.

I’d see this as yet another one of Pholus’ intoxicants – without taking away from the tragedy that befell indigenous nations because of the madness that ensued.

This just brings up so much doesn’t it. I’m going to stop here for the 19th century as digging further just hurts way too much. You get the idea though.

20th century: 1928-1952

The US Stock Market crashed in 1929, leading to the Great Depression. This was attributed to panicky investors losing faith in the US economy and withdrawing their stocks en masse. This led to widespread poverty and unemployment worldwide. It lasted until 1941 in the United States.

Whilst this was ongoing, authoritarian regimes in Europe and South America consolidated their power in the 1930s.

On a different note: Gandhi led the satyagraha (non-violent protest movement) in India in 1930. India gains independence in 1947 – starting the wave of independence movements in British colonies that would severely limit the reach and power of the British empire.

WW2 breaks out in 1939 and ends in 1945. This involves the deaths of millions of people – and of course the Holocaust. The lines of division were drawn between the Allies and the Axis nations.

The end of WW2 leads to the creation of new dividing lines: Capitalism vs. Communism with the Americans at one pole and the Soviets at the other. The early 1950s would see much of this focused in proxy wars in Algeria, Korea, etc as part of the Cold War.

If I had to summarize, Pholus in Capricorn in this period is essentially about what it was before: conquest, power, consolidation of control. It’s intoxicant is ideology, especially those that promise economic or social security – and in ways that still justify the enslavement, military deployment and torture of others.

2018 – 2043:

Given the review of Pholus in Capricorn in prior years – in the next 23 years – we are likely to see:

(1) Major changes in the structure of global power

(2) Major ideological narratives that act as ‘ intoxicants ‘ fueling attempts at control and intimidation or acting as incitements to war

(3) Major attempts at controlling the movement and freedoms of subjects deemed as inferior, worthless, etc.

(4) The designation of some substance, object or resources as something worth fighting others over to control and gain access to

Honestly, from this perspective, coronavirus is the least of our problems. However, the coronavirus may be pointing us towards the intoxicant of this age: Fear & Panic.

Fear brings out the worst in people, as does panic. We then lose our capacity for individual thought and act out in mob fashion. Our minds become far more susceptible to ideologues pointing at some people as ‘ dirty ‘ , ‘ vectors’ , ‘ unsafe’, and justifying inhumane acts to police them.

This is the true virus in many senses of the term.

I’d like to thank my brother for also pointing out that Dionysus is related to the mythological figure of Pan, whose drums are said to induce Panic. And truly – that association fits at this time. And for general feedback and questions that helped me make this article a better and more thorough piece.

If this analysis shows you anything, it is to watch out for ideologies that justify control in the name of fear as the spectre of existential threat is raised time and time again. Even though it is part and parcel of human life to go through these experiences of disease and that the fact that medical interventions have drastically lowered mortality rates globally.

Yes – coronavirus is a serious issue – and No – statistically speaking, it’s not that likely to kill you. The virus has extremely low rates amongst children and the highest mortality rates in those above 60 years of age. This is not to say that we should ignore that, but to remember to keep the facts straight.

Pay attention to your immune system.

Give yourself room to breathe. Do pranayama (yogic breathing exercises).

Cut out all sources of information telling you to panic and give into fear.

Because really, that’s how the next bid for power and control is going to happen.

And it’s already happening.

Do things that give you hope and courage. Or at least a little boost in self-esteem over the things that you can control and accomplish.

And remember that we are all in this together. Finger-pointing and conspiracy theories are not going to heal people who are in need of help.

Remember the ‘ slaves ‘ on the Amistad who were taken and yet able to sue for their freedom. It took many hands and hearts and voices to get that done. And people who were willing and able to speak up for truth.

Be one of those people to the best of your ability. And take care of yourself and your loved ones.

Stay indoors and wash your hands. Nip this in the bud before it tries to take root for a 1-3 year period!

The world needs its truth-tellers intact.

  1. Thank you, thank you, for this illuminating information, you are a blessing in our lives. Rest well 💖💖💖

  2. Sis. I overstand all that you have expressed. I am here for you. Thank you for your work. <3

  3. thank you Bairavee for this historical overview exploring the mythology of Pholus as the ignorant, but well meaning bearer of a dangerous intoxicant. I had never once thought about Pholus and the Dionysian intoxicant in the myth of Chiron. Your brief survey of recent (400 years) history regarding intoxicants to support war, exploitation and the destruction of peoples, lands and resources is grim. I think it is a book in itself.

As far as I can see locally, fear panic and mayhem need to be countered by presence and simple acts of kindness and goodwill. Some of this is evident but the enactment of emergency powers to enforce control over movement of populations is a worrying sign of how easily we accept authoritiarian control when afraid. As we speak state after Australian state is closing its borders to Australian citizens in other states! I do think we will be going into economic meltdown and the real test will be in a couple of years when we try to re organise who has access to what. xxx

  4. After thinking about all this it occurred to me that it isn’t the intoxicant in the myth or in our psychology that is the problem just what we do with it. The soma of the gods can fill us ecstacy and loving kindness or drive us crazy. In the Greek myth it was actually just the unpreparedness of the centaurs that were driven into a frenzy by its aroma that caused the chaos, the death of the hero and the wounding of Chiron.
I then looked up Pholus in my own birthchart. Forgive me for personal sharing but it illustrates a point. Pholus sits at 2 degrees Aquarius between Mercury at 29 degrees Capricorn and Eros and the Sun at 4 degrees Aquarius in the third house. Now I didn’t know this as I have never looked at Pholus before, but I have always thought that Eros here with the Sun in the sign of Aquarius ,the cup bearer, is about my bringing a divine intoxication for life into the world. Pholus is another bringer of the wine of delight. Perhaps the very best antidote to fear and corruption is to find the sources of joy all around us? xx
